We are past the middle of September.
By the calendar it is autumn, but Okinawa still wears its summer face.
The days are as hot as ever.
The light does go sooner, though.
We close up the workshop a little earlier than we did.
When it gets dark early, the lamps stay on longer.
That is the season we are heading into.
One small announcement.
Since August, we have been opening the shop on Sundays as well.
Sunday used to be our day off.
We wanted to keep that time for our children.
But they have grown, and we have started wanting to get ready for whatever comes next.
We had also been asked, more than once, whether we might open on Sundays.
And there is one more reason.
Our children don’t play with us any more.
That may well be the biggest one.
So we are here on Sundays too.
If you find yourself nearby, please do just drop in.

The table we’d been prototyping in the workshop is finished.
It began with large boards, laid side by side.
No two boards look the same, so where each one sits changes the face of the whole table. We lay them out, swap them around, step back and look again. Deciding takes longer than anything else.
The timber is meranti. Top and legs alike, all solid wood.

The boards that become the legs get stood upright to be checked. Lying flat and standing up, the grain reads completely differently.
One question stayed with us the whole way through.
We wanted the table to have presence — but not at the cost of a quiet, unfussy shape. Something that could sit in any room without getting in the way of it.
We wanted both at once.

The answer turned out to be in the legs.
Instead of four square legs, we let two panels carry the top.
A plane standing on the floor has weight to it. And with fewer lines in the piece, it goes quiet.

The other thing we agonised over was where to put the legs.
Push them right out to the ends and the structure becomes simpler. But then the table decides for you where people can sit.

300 mm in from each end. That is where they settled — so that you can sit along the long side as well.

There is no apron beneath the top either, so nothing meets your knees when you sit down.
We set it against a white wall and pulled up an old chair. They get along.

We made it to suit any room, and on that count, we think it worked.
The top measures 2000 × 1000 mm, standing 720 mm high, and 50 mm thick, finished with a clear oil.
Meranti in a 50 mm slab, wide enough for a top like this, does not come along often. We can only build when some comes in, so this is a one-off.
We couldn’t make the same table twice.
There is more about it on our website, if you’d like to look.

This time, I found myself writing about things that can never be made exactly the same way twice.
Because that particular piece of wood came to us, we were able to make the table with that thickness.
If it hadn’t, the table would have become something entirely different.
I think we can only make things from what is there with us at that particular moment.
Perhaps time with our children is the same.
Our next letter is scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd.
The mornings and evenings are gradually becoming a little more comfortable.
Please take good care of yourself.
Warmly,
Ryo Higa
