Hello,
The national high school baseball tournament is underway at Koshien Stadium — every August, the whole country follows it.
Some days we work with it on in the workshop. The players are close in age to our own children. Perhaps that’s why our hands keep stopping.
The sound of planing. The sound of machines. And between them, the commentary and the crack of a bat.
To give yourself entirely to one thing. To let the frustration and the joy show plainly on your face.
It gets harder to do that as you get older.
Perhaps it is that plainness that moves people.
Last month I wrote that our workshop soundtrack was orchestral music. Now it is play-by-play and a brass band in the stands. For these few weeks each year, the air in here changes.
From inside this sauna of a workshop, we send our cheers out to the boys on the field. On sweat alone, we like to think we’re keeping up.

Indigo
Lately I think of little but materials.
Everything creeps upward.
Timber will be up another few percent from the next delivery. The glue will rise by this much.
Every time we order, our supplier tells us, always a little apologetically. None of it is their doing, and still they are the one who says it.
We reach for convenience. We spend resources, and money. And what we’ve built that way comes undone at once when a single gear slips.
I don’t want to make it grander than it is. But it feels as though the earth were asking us, gently, whether it might be time to think about resources together.
Since the day Indigo opened, we’ve made our work from timber and building materials that had already finished their first life.
Calling it “recycling” sounds too noble. We simply liked old things. That is all.
Honestly, reclaimed wood is work.
Pulling nails. Washing. Planing. Reading the scars.
Only then does it become a material. New lumber is faster, and cheaper.
So why do we keep going back?
This can still be used.
This is about to become something else.
Those two things, and nothing more.

Oval、Circle、Leaves、Peace、Double、Pleat。

Right now, a number of lights hang in our shop.
Iron wire. Corrugated tin. Reclaimed wood. Frosted glass.
Each of them once had a purpose, somewhere else.
Oval, Circle, Leaves, Peace, Double, Pleat.
No two are the same shape, so we gave them names. Once a thing has a name, a face appears.
But we could never make them alone.
The frosted glass in the box lantern came from a demolition site.
Breaking it out would take a moment. Instead the whole sash is lifted away, slowly, so the glass survives.
This patterned glass is no longer made. Once a pane breaks, the pattern is gone.
“I always felt it was a waste to throw this away. If it can be of use to someone, that makes me glad too.”
That is what the contractor tells us.
When a light is finished, we send a photograph. This is what that window became.
The iron rings were bent at a local ironworks. Rounder than our hands could manage.
Many hands stand behind a single light. Each time one is finished, we wonder how it ever came together.
Lights are not quite like furniture.
Nothing in the room has moved. And yet the moment one is switched on, the space is under a spell.
It’s so enjoyable that we turn them on again and again.
These pieces will be added to our web shop as they become available.

This is the show we postponed from July. We felt low when we decided it.
But the moment we had time, we began to see more. Had we rushed, we would have walked straight past it.
The other day we tried the cloth against the frame.
The ring frame is our own, built for this piece. The cloth is handwoven by Marie of TEORI WORKS.
It has more body than we expected. Let go of it, and it stands up on its own.
We clip it in place and adjust, little by little. A single line out of position changes the whole face of it.
That same body makes the edges harder to finish. They are rolled in and stitched down by hand.
One extra step, and then another.
When we put a light inside, the weave let it through, and we could see the threads one by one.
How will it look beneath a winter light? That’s what we’re imagining as we work through the summer heat.

It seems this letter has been all about light.
There is something a little funny about discussing a winter exhibition at the height of summer — but making things always walks a season or two ahead of the calendar.
Our next letter is planned for September 19.
Next time, we hope to share a recent project for a jewelry shop.
The heat will be with us a while longer yet. Please take care of yourselves. Plenty of water, and perhaps a short afternoon nap.
